Description
This wooden decoy is from the Youngstown, New York estate of Sharon K. (McNerney) Fisher, daughter of Kathryn McNerney, who was an authority on primitive antiques and authored 13 books on the subject, includingPrimitives, Our American Heritage
, in which this decoy is featured on page 40 (see photos). The second edition of the book with updated values (1994) is included in this auction and was purchased from the estate along with the decoy.
Page 40 below the photo of the decoy reads:
"BUFFLEHEAD DUCK (BUFFALOHEAD). So called because head had thick fluffy feathers. This example is from Currituck Sound, North Carolina; metal eyes; 9-3/4" L x 5-1/2" H x 4 3/4" across the back; solid wood."
The value guide on page 156 reads:
"Buffalohead Duck Decoy (Buffalohead).....0.00"
The decoy is weighted and signed on the bottom.
