    Description

Vintage Canvasback Drake Duck Decoy, Red Glass Eyes, Full Keel, East Coast Style
Condition: Excellent condition handmade and painted Canvasback Duck decoy. The head on this decoy is one of the most beautiful I have ever owned. Hollow decoy. Beautifully shaped head. Red glass eyes. Full bottom keel. Metal plate on bottom of keel. Maker unknown. No marks. Age unknown but in my opinion this is by a known carver and it is definitely vintage. Prior price tag is on bottom. Handmade original stand is included. See 12 photos.
There is a thin metal or lead insert in the base of the keel on this decoy. There appear to be characters indented into the strip, but I cannot read them, or maybe not? It could be a maker mark, or maybe not.

The East Coast Duck Decoy Style: In my opinion this decoy is a fine example of the East Coast Style in decoy making.
The East Coast has a rich tradition of decoy carving, and several renowned carvers have left their mark. Here are some notable names: as examples similar to this decoy
Anthony Elmer (A.E.) Crowell: A fine commercial decoy maker from New England, Crowell’s decoys are highly sought after. His lifelike positions and colorful soft feather paint patterns set his work apart. His iconic racy swimming mergansers are particularly famous.
Joseph Lincoln: Known for his classic oversize decoys, Lincoln’s black duck designs are considered some of the best on the East Coast.
Charles Perdew, Ken Harris, the Ward Brothers, Robert Elliston, and Shang Wheeler: These carvers are also among the field’s blue-chip artists, contributing to the East Coast decoy legacy.
The East Coast style emphasizes lifelike poses, intricate paint patterns, and attention to detail. Decoys were often full-bodied or hollow, with glass or painted eyes and ornately decorated wings and feathers. While most decoys were ducks, carved swans and other birds were also made as folk art rather than for hunting purposes1.
